Apple replaces its Power Mac computer

Apple was replacing its Power Mac computer with a speedier machine based on new Intel dual-core chips, the company announced on Monday.

"Today, the Power Mac is going to fade into history," Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told thousands of developers gathered in San Francisco for a conference.

New Mac Pro computers began shipping on Monday with a price tag of 2,499 dollars, according to Apple marketing vice president Phil Schiller.

Mac Pros are built with two Intel Xeon chips and double the performance of the Power Mac machines they were replacing, Schiller said.

"This is the Mac that so many of our highest-end customers dreamed of," Schiller said. "These are screaming-fast machines and the new king of the hill for the Mac is the Mac Pro.
